Who we are
Revelations Counseling
Our licensed therapists at our clinical practice, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, apply evidence-based treatments and diagnostic assessments to achieve meaningful change, personal growth, and positive outcomes. We offer treatment services for individuals, couples, families, and groups to improve psychological health, personal resilience, relational satisfaction, and overall quality of life. Our therapists are experienced in managing issues related to anxiety, trauma and stressor-related disorders, relational distress, mood disorders (e.g., depression, bipolar), neurocognitive developmental issues (e.g., autism, ADHD), dissociative disorders, personality disorders, substance use, and other addictions.
Our clinical practice specialties include couples and family therapy, trauma-informed care (e.g., EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy), youth and teen counseling, and the integration of spirituality and faith. Our treatment services are also culturally attuned to the challenges faced by individuals currently or previously employed in hazardous occupations with inherently dangerous duty assignments—e.g., military, veterans, law enforcement, fire, rescue, emergency medicine, and other first responders.
Our Counseling Services
For Individuals
Counseling For Individuals, Couples, & Families
Committing to individual therapy requires courage, and our therapists take the responsibility of your trust in us very seriously. There are no judgments, just exceptionally experienced counsel that will collaborate with you to forge the pathways for problem-solving and change. We help navigate past adverse childhood experiences or other trauma, guide new perspectives on present functioning, and build a vision for future experiences where you will discover your best. Our therapists see clients of all ages, from young children to senior citizens, and we maintain certifications and training in the treatment of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress and acute stress disorders, substance use, couples and family systems issues, career transitions, and mood disorders.
There is a primal desire within the human spirit to find secure attachment with someone who will commit to the blessing of reciprocity with unconditional acceptance; despite all our fears and imperfections, these healthy relationships are determined to resolve the deep human need for belonging, worthiness, and profound intimacy. This is love defined, and it is no myth. When we dance, we occasionally step on one another’s feet. Couples therapy offers renewed choreography—to encourage your intentional pursuit of knowing one another more fully, to communicate more effectively, to organically repair conflicts, and to dream and aspire together. The climb is most definitely worth the view.
The family is an emotional system with relational interdependencies among all its members. Family therapy applies systems theory to evaluate the existing structures, processes, and patterns in how a family communicates, manages conflict, makes decisions, defines its individual roles and values, and examines the influences of its generational legacies—both the positive and the negative. In healthy families, every member feels encouraged to be their authentic self—without masks or pretense—and also gains confidence in expressing relational and emotional needs without either hostility or fear. No challenge is too great for the cohesive family that cheerfully reflects love and respect in every direction.
Additional Specialties
Our youth and teens are facing more intense pressure today than ever before. Normal developmental issues associated with academic performance, peer influences, and body image are challenging enough for young people trying to find self-confidence and shape their identity. The targeting of children with adult themes in popular culture, on social media, and the accessible images of violent and sexual content on smartphones only adds additional risk for harm to developing minds. Parents may feel shut out from their children's private worlds and sometimes feel they are imperfect messengers of the loving guidance their children need. At Revelations, we are here to bridge that distance. Most of our therapists have young children of their own, and some have also served as school counselors, in adolescent residential treatment centers, and have received prestigious awards for their clinical excellence in treating youth and adolescents.
Our CEO is a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, and our Chief Clinical Officer served alongside him for 21 years as a military spouse. Our entire practice is very personally attuned to the uniquely inherent challenges of long deployments, post-deployment reintegration with the family, and multiple relocations to new homes and schools for the next duty assignment. Revelations also provides counsel to transitioning active-duty military and their family members who may feel uncertain about future employment or financial wellness. We empathize with how removing the uniform often invokes a sense of change in a service member’s identity, the loss of their tribe, and the risk of isolation. Among all the hazardous duty assignments of public service—including law enforcement, fire, and rescue—when duty requires the full measure of personal sacrifice, the invisible wounds of those experiences may present clinically as post-traumatic stress, substance use disorder, and major depression. Sometimes the job results in recovering from even more profound loss and physical injuries (e.g., traumatic brain injury, amputations, etc.). Our therapists honor and specialize in the care of these patriots of public service, as well as survivors, their caregivers, and the entire family system.
Research surveys have consistently found that nearly 90% of Americans believe in God or a Higher Power; moreover, the vast majority of these individuals consider their personal spiritual practices an important part of their daily lives. At Revelations, our counselors believe that a responsible multicultural perspective of our clients must not only account for gender, race, and ethnicity, but also be prepared to integrate our clients’ spirituality as a fundamental facet of their identity.

Chief Executive Officer
Guy Strawder is a principal with Revelations Counseling & Consulting with nearly 40 years of operations, policy, and leadership experience within the federal healthcare sector, Military Health System, and support for other Government agencies.
Guy is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist at Revelations Counseling & Consulting in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he applies family systems theory and interventions for individual counseling to treat anxiety, depression, and addictions, and to resolve relational problems in the counseling of families, couples, and adolescents (13+ years and older). He also incorporates complementary interventions from Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Existential Therapy. As a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army with prior combat deployments, Guy frequently counsels military service members, veterans, and their families regarding adjustment disorders, acute stress, post-traumatic stress, and other related mental health issues. Guy also frequently works in co-therapy sessions with his wife, Joanne, to counsel couples and families. Joanne is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and also a practicing therapist at Revelations Counseling & Consulting.
In addition to his current counseling practice, Guy also provides professional consulting to several client organizations in market areas that include: clinical services delivery; mental health counseling services; health information technology; military and veteran family whole-health services; career transition and employment; wounded warrior care and coaching; and strategic planning for one of the country’s largest academic medical centers. His previous commercial sector experience includes assignments as a lead corporate executive for Fortune 500 occupational health services firms and as vice president for a consulting firm in the National Capital Area, where he was responsible for overseeing several Department of War health programs.
Before he retired from the Army in 2006, Guy was the Defense Health Agency’s Director for the TRICARE managed care health plan, and the responsible officer for providing quality, accessible healthcare to 5 million enrolled beneficiaries. From 2001 to 2004, he was the senior military advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, where he assisted in strategic medical planning for Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM, interagency planning for the nation’s defense against chemical and biological terrorism, and transforming the Military Health System organizational redesign and the multi-billion dollar performance-based managed care support contracts. Guy served with the 82d Airborne Division and commanded the largest medical company in the XVIII Airborne Corps during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and was also an operations and intelligence officer for the planning and execution of numerous contingencies, including Operations GOLDEN PHEASANT (Honduras and Nicaragua) and JUST CAUSE (Panama). Due to his diverse experiences in military service, public service, and private sector assignments, he was invited in 2007 to present conceptual solutions to the President’s Commission on the Care of America’s Returning Wounded Warriors—the “Dole-Shalala Commission.”
Mr. Strawder has published and contributed to numerous articles on military medicine in journals such as Joint Forces Quarterly, Proceedings, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and Army Logistician. He is the recipient of three Telly awards and an international videographer award for his work on training and education films sponsored by the Department of War. His military decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (3), the Southwest Asian Service Medal (2), the Multinational Force and Observer’s Medal, and several other campaign medals. He has also earned the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Expert Field Medical Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.
Guy has earned a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Liberty University, and both a Master of Healthcare Administration and meeting all graduate requirements for a Master of Science in Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a resident graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College, a certified medical laboratory scientist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and a board-certified healthcare executive with the American College of Healthcare Executives. Guy was born into an Army family at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as the son of a Vietnam War combat veteran who retired as a Command Sergeant Major after 27 years of service. He and Joanne now reside in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where they are immensely blessed with the company of their three daughters, two sons-in-law, and two granddaughters.

Joanne Strawder, LCSW
Chief Clinical Officer
Joanne is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and completed her master’s degree in social work at Virginia Commonwealth University.
As a principal of Revelations, Joanne has more than 30 years of professional experience in mental health with specific qualifications in case management, partial hospitalization programs, foster care, geriatric care, and crisis intervention and trauma treatment. Before joining Revelations, Joanne served for nine years as a social worker for Stafford County Public Schools, where she often served as an advocate in cases presented before the Special Education/Family Assessment and Planning Team.
As a lifelong social worker, Joanne primarily uses solution-focused therapy and integrates cognitive-behavioral and family systems interventions into her practice. Her prior experience with multiple populations enables her to work with clients from early childhood to older adulthood.
As the spouse of a retired US Army commissioned officer, Joanne has also had the privilege of leading Family Readiness Groups for unit commands during extended deployments. Joanne is a participating TRICARE provider, and she often works with military service members, veterans, and their families to treat adjustment disorders, acute stress, relational issues, and post-traumatic stress. At Snowden, she provided both case management and psychotherapeutic services for hospitalized adults and developed the initial assessment for patients referred to the emergency department for psychiatric care. She was also assigned to conduct both individual and group therapy counseling sessions for inpatient and partial hospitalization programs. In 1998, Joanne also worked with the Prince William County Department of Social Services’ Foster Care unit, providing case management and psychotherapeutic services to adolescents placed in the county’s foster care program. In this position, she consulted with the Department’s attorneys to present client case documentation for legal proceedings and collaborated with foster parents, mental health professionals, teachers, physicians, and law enforcement officials to assist clients in maintaining quality foster care placements in the community.
Joanne was raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and, after following her husband around the country for a 21-year military career, she and Guy are now settled in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where they immensely enjoy the company of their three incredible daughters, two sons-in-law, and two grandchildren.

Director of Clinical Services
Tori is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and completed her education at the National Catholic School of Social Service at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Prior to her completing her Master of Social Work, she was conferred her Bachelor’s degree in Theology from Catholic University and also completed a Certificate for Pastoral Ministry. Tori previously served as a clinical instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, co-facilitating a course for medical student cohorts focused on professional development and assessment skills. She also holds a Board of Oncology social worker certification and is a licensed psychotherapist in both Washington, DC, and Virginia.
During her career in outpatient oncology, Tori advocated and walked alongside many families through the process of diagnosis, treatment, end-of-life, and managing grief. Individuals suffering from chronic illnesses are often overwhelmed with numerous challenges, including family system dynamics and the tumult of intense and fluctuating emotions of fear, anxiety, depression, anger, and anticipatory grief. These challenges also raise existential questions about the meaning of life and personal faith. Tori’s experiences as a therapist have inspired her counseling style, which creates space for clients to process crucial questions about themselves, others, and the world without judgment.
Tori’s counseling approach uses solutions-focused and cognitive-behavioral therapies with a foundational perspective informed by attachment theory and family systems relationships. She specializes in clients over the age of 18. She is very passionate about counseling young adults who are suffering from disabling anxiety, depression, and grief, or otherwise needing counsel due to chronic illness, caregiving responsibilities, end-of-life issues, or spiritual distress.
Tori has completed training through the Enriching Communication Skills for Health Professionals in Oncofertility (ECHO) program from Moffitt Cancer Center and Sensitive Practice Training through Mount Sinai Health System. She has presented lectures on spirituality, the importance of self-care for those with chronic illness, how to tell the children about cancer, and how to support the mental health of cancer patients and their caregivers going through CAR T-cell immunotherapy treatment.
In her free time, Tori enjoys exploring coffee shops, farmers’ markets, and restaurants around Fredericksburg with her husband and daughters. To decompress, she loves to watch her chickens from the back porch with her dog, Hunter.

Heather Ulstad, M.S. MERP
Resident in Counseling
Heather serves a dual role at Revelations as both the Senior Operations Director and a Resident in Counseling. Her roles are supported by her education with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (Wayne State University), a Certificate in Forensic Investigation (Wayne State University), and a Master of Science in Military and Emergency Responder Psychology [MERP] (Colorado State University Global). Her current work and practice fulfill a lifetime goal of providing personal development and mental health care to our military, veterans, first responders, and other high-risk occupations, as well as their loved ones. Heather recognizes a health care gap between the unique stressors and vital roles these individuals play and the resources available to integrate these occupational roles into our personal and family lives. These warrior and guardian roles often bleed into non-work areas in ways that can be unhelpful, and she aims to help us build better ways to live out our best personal and professional selves. Heather offers counseling and coaching to individuals, couples, and families, and focuses on promoting whole-health and performance by treating anxiety, stress, trauma (childhood, occupational, systemic), grief and loss, and building communication and conflict navigation skills.
Heather’s professional background provides a unique intersection of experience, with a strong foundation in psychological education and practical knowledge in responder service and culture from her experience as a federal law enforcement officer. Heather’s approach to counseling integrates cognitive-behavioral, existential, solutions-focused, and attachment-oriented modalities through a systems lens and a person-centered focus. Heather is also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy through a certification program offered by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). She utilizes components of CBT, ACT, DBT, and IFS in counseling as well. As a counseling resident, she is not currently taking insurance but does offer promotional rates for military members, veterans, and first responders. She also provides sliding-scale rates.
Heather is originally from Michigan and was born in Detroit proper, where she lived and worked as a young adult. Detroit has a special place in her heart because, as she puts it, “That city has grit!” Detroit is also special because it’s the place where she met her husband, with whom she shares the joy of raising two boisterous girls. She enjoys being active in the outdoors, and you’ll find her running, cycling, and rollerblading as the seasons permit. She enjoys reading fantasy fiction, thrillers, and spiritual and professional development material, as well as live music. Heather appreciates a deep connection with dogs and revels in exploring new places with her family in their 17-foot bunkhouse camper.

Supervisee in Social Work
Amanda “Mandy” Sharps is a Resident in Social Work and has earned a Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also completed her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where she graduated with honors and was selected in 2018 to present her research before the university’s Institutional Review Board on the topic of “Is Current Health Care Policy Effectively Assisting Women Veterans?”
Mandy’s professional background represents an intersection of her strong educational foundation in evidence-based practices and her significant practical experience advocating for high-needs youth and young adults. She was previously employed as a student School Social Worker in the Spotsylvania School System, and then as a Family Services Specialist in the Stafford County Department of Social Services. Her continuing education and clinical practice remain inspired through her experiences coordinating and providing mental health services for vulnerable and marginalized populations.
Mandy specializes in working with children 8 years and older, including adolescents and young adults. Still, she sees clients of all ages presenting with anxiety, depression, compulsive disorders, autism spectrum disorders, post-traumatic stress, challenges with peer relationships, self-esteem, and identity issues. Mandy’s primary treatment approaches operate from trauma-informed and attachment frameworks and include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Existential Therapy. Her treatment goals for every client focus on engendering greater personal resilience, autonomy, and self-advocacy.
In her free time, Mandy mostly enjoys spending time with her daughter, Iris, and pouring into her local community to be a voice for the voiceless.

Counseling FAQs
We often hear the same questions from people visiting our website or considering therapy for the first time. Here are some of these questions and answers.
This really depends upon the presenting complaint and diagnosis, the collaborative goals you set with your counselor, and what you would hope to achieve in your therapy. You and your counselor will explore this at the start of treatment, and will evaluate progress with your treatment plan at defined periodic intervals. As a client, you always have the right to refuse therapeutic recommendations and can choose to end therapy at any point.
If your partner doesn’t want to attend counseling, it can still help to go on your own. The first step is to simply communicate to them what you are observing in your relationship. It will be a natural response for him or her to resist treatment at first. Let them know how important they are to you, and communicate your confidence that seeking a competent therapist will help both of you find a new perspective. If they still feel uncomfortable about the idea, be transparent and let them know you still intend to seek treatment for yourself and possibly the family. Individual counseling should provide insights into your own thinking and attachment style, as well as tools to communicate your emotional needs more effectively and manage conflict. Often, the change your partner sees in your own progress is the encouragement they need.
